The American Geriatrics Society (AGS) released a new and completely revised 8th edition of its Geriatrics Review Syllabus: A Core Curriculum in Geriatric Medicine (GRS8) today, the first day of the society's three-day Annual Scientific Meeting.
Required reading for all healthcare professionals and trainees who care for older adults, the GRS provides a comprehensive review of best practices in geriatrics, based on the latest medical evidence and clinical knowledge.
GRS8 contains 64 chapters authored by a team of more than 180 leading experts in the health care of older adults. The new edition includes updates based on important new findings published since the previous edition was released in 2010, as well as two brand new chapter topics. This most recent edition provides strength-of-evidence ratings for key diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic information. The new edition also offers more than 300 case-oriented multiple-choice questions with answers, critiques, and references, and is an essential reference for those preparing for geriatrics exams. The GSR8 also offers 90 continuing medical education (CME) credits.
Along with the new print edition, GRS8 is also available online for the first time at www.GeriatricsCareOnline.org. New in 2013, GeriatricsCareOnline.org offers online access to AGS publications and products. Individual subscribers will be able to customize the content they access based on their needs and interests. Institutional licensing opportunities are also available for most AGS products through the new site.
“In designing the site,” said John Murphy, MD, a Past President of the AGS and a lead advisor on the project, “we envisioned a process whereby health systems or educational institutions could engage with us to create customized content for their health providers or trainees. For example, we could work with a health system to package specific didactic materials and clinical tools related to dementia, with the goal of improving the capacity of their clinicians to care for older adults with dementia and other cognitive impairments.”
The new online edition of the GRS8 comes complete with interactive tools that allow users to take notes within chapter content, add bookmarks, search within and across content, email links to colleagues and friends, and create custom practice self-assessment tests.
The development of a GRS8 Self-Assessment App is also underway, and will be available in June 2013 to users who purchase an online subscription to the GRS8. The GRS8 App will allow users to review and answer questions offline, while on the go. Later, when online, they can simply upload their answers and submit their completed test.
“With the rapid growth of our older population,” said Jennie Chin Hansen, AGS CEO, “it is imperative that all healthcare professionals have easy access to geriatrics information and expand their competence in providing quality care for older adults. GeriatricsCareOnline.org was designed with this goal in mind.”
