American Geriatrics Society Care of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Older Adults Position Statement

Product Type : Guidelines, Recommendations & Position Statements
Publisher :American Geriatrics Society

These recommendations published by The American Geriatrics Society (AGS) incorporate data obtained from a literature review of the most recent studies available at the time. As with all clinical reference resources, they reflect the best understanding of the science of medicine at the time of publication, but they should be used with the clear understanding that continued research may result in new knowledge and recommendations. These Recommendations are intended for general information only, are not medical advice, and do not replace professional medical care and physician advice, which always should be sought for any specific condition.

There is ample evidence that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals face discrimination in the healthcare setting. Providing high-quality health care for older LGBT adults will require active steps by organiza- tions, institutions, advocacy groups, and health profession- als that create an environment that is free from discrimination. This position statement that the American Geriatrics Society (AGS) Ethics Committee developed addresses the vision of the AGS for the care of LGBT older adults and specific steps that can be taken to ensure that they receive the care that they need.

This position statement has been endorsed by the following organizations:

Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association

AMDA - The Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine

National Association of Directors of Nursing Administration in Long Term Care

Services & Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE)
