AGS is pleased to announce the online publication of newly updated Doorway Thoughts: Cross-Cultural Health Care for Older Adults.

The “doorway thoughts” in the title are key concepts concerning cultural influences on the dynamic between providers and patients. These are concepts that clinicians should reflect on before “walking through the doorway of any examining, consultation, or hospital room.”

Doorway Thoughts explores cross-cultural differences in: preferred terms for cultural identity and degree of formality in interactions; what constitutes respectful nonverbal communication; underlying assumptions about health, illness and medical care; approaches to medical decision making; and attitudes about full disclosure of health information.
